A DAD and his daughter have won seats in Great Sankey South – while a husband and wife have been elected as councillors in Birchwood.

Three Labour councillors were elected in Great Sankey South – including Mo Hussain, aged 57 – who became Warrington’s first British Bangladeshi borough councillor in 2021 – and his daughter Leah, aged 26.

Mo said: “It’s absolutely fantastic, to have somebody like my daughter on board as well, a young person, a female, and a professional solicitor, I think it’s great – we want more young people to come into politics.

“We were expecting to win but we didn’t expect the margin to be so large, so thank you to the people in Great Sankey South for coming out and having faith in us and voting.

“We’ll never stop working for the residents of Great Sankey South.

“This is something I’ll continue to do, whether I’m a councillor or not, this is something in my heart, and I’ll always do that.”

Labour also won three seats in Birchwood – including Kuldeep Singh Dhillon and his wife Balbir Kaur Dhillon, who have been married for 39 years.

Kuldeep said: “Very excited to represent the Sikh community in our council.

“There’s a large number of Sikhs in Warrington and we need representation at the council.”

Furthermore, council leader Cllr Hans Mundry, Labour, and Cllr Karen Mundry, Labour, retained their seats in the Latchford East ward - the council leader said his wife ‘works very hard’.

They have been married for over 30 years.

Hans joked: “She did ask me because she won the most votes between us two. does that make her the leader – we’re checking the technicalities of that right now.”
