SOS from Dorothys

9:04am Saturday 17th May 2008

DESPERATE Dorothys are pleading for help to keep a community garden looking its best.

The garden in Lawton Street, Congleton, was praised by RHS judges last year.

It continues to be stocked and maintained by Congleton in Bloom, but Dorothy Knott and Dorothy Latham are doing all the work on their own.

"They have created a beautiful oasis, but it is debatable how long they can continue to sustain their efforts without some help from residents," said Congleton in Bloom secretary Margaret Williamson.

"It would be a huge shame if the garden, which has been developed over the last 10 years, cannot be maintained at its current very high standard because of the lack of a few more volunteers.

"They are desperate for some help with weeding, and if you can donate a couple of hours a week or a fortnight please ring 01260-274738 and offer your help."

Some 20 children, staff and parents from local primary schools helped plant up 40 floral tubs on Saturday as their contribution to Congleton's summer colour.

The pupils created a red, pink and blue theme in their named tubs, which will be placed around the bus station and in the pedestrian area.

The compost has again been sponsored by Scotts, and a grant from the Cheshire Year of the Garden committee paid for some of the plants.

Mrs Williamson praised the youngsters for their hard work and concentration, as well as two members of the ATC who helped to fill the tubs with compost.
