THE family of a grandmother who died following a road collision in Stretford have paid tribute.

Shortly before 11.15am today (August 18) police were informed of a crash near Stretford Arndale involving a large box van and 91-year-old pedestrian Audrey Bagnall on Kingsway.

She was taken to Trafford General Hospital with a serious head injury and later died.

Audrey lived with her daughter Karen and granddaughter Rebecca on Davyhulme Road East and Karen described her as forthright and sprightly despite her years.

She said: "My mum was a very independent woman and even at 91 still walked to the Stretford Arndale to do her shopping, and walked back without any help.

"During the war, my mum worked as clothing designer in Blackpool and after the war she ran a sweet and tobacco shop on Davyhulme Road East.

“Even when she retired, she continued to work as a checkout assistant at Safeway.

"She was a wonderful person and she will be sadly missed by all the family."

Road closures implemented at the junction of Kingsway and Stretford Road have since been lifted.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to call the Area 4 Road Policing Unit on 0161 856 7771.

Exiled Tyke, Manchester says...

My condolences go out to all the family and friends after this accident. I crossed Kingsway just before the police closed the crossing off completely and was shocked to see that the accident happened only a few minutes before.
