12:57pm Monday 25th August 2008

STUDENTS at Congleton High School are celebrating GCSE exam success.

Some 52.3 per cent of students achieved the new national benchmark of five or more A star to C grades, including English and maths.

The school said its strong commitment to engineering had resulted in 73 per cent of students gaining a grade C or better in design and technology-related subjects.

The core subjects of English, maths and science all achieved a pass rate of more than 62 per cent.

The overall pass rate for five or more A star to C grades was 65 per cent.

“Our wide and varied curriculum via our Option K programme has helped to increase the number of students gaining at least one grade C at GCSE to 87 per cent,” said headteacher David Hermitt.

“It also allows younger students to study AS levels alongside traditional GCSEs.

“Consequently 35 students have achieved over 500 individual points.”

Richard Bell led the way by amassing more than 700 points, with a grade B at AS level in politics.

He is one of 45 students (25 per cent) gaining an A star grade in more than one subject.

This group includes Sarah Marsh (9), Tim Bartley (8), Robert Crookes (8), Anna Kemball (8), Kevin Cameron (6), Robert Jones (6) and Nicholas Davies (6).

“Parents and staff will be pleased that their support and encouragement has helped students to achieve these remarkable results,” said Mr Hermitt.

The average GCSE point score at Congleton High School was 393.

The girls performed better than the boys, by achieving a score of 405, compared with 381 for the boys.
