Tree frog leaves Cuba and finds a new life at animal sanctuary

A GREEN globetrotter has finally settled in a new home after a 4,500-mile journey from the far flung corners of the earth.

The Cuban tree frog, which was originally believed to be Colombian, hitched a ride to Middlewich in the back of a delivery wagon but has now been adopted by staff at Lower Moss Wood animal sanctuary in Ollerton, Knutsford.

Florist Sue Vernon, from Charlotte Rose Florist in Southway, discovered the exotic creature clinging to a bird of paradise plant she had delivered.

“Wherever he comes from, he’s well travelled,” she said.

Staff at the centre say ‘Pablo’, as he’s now affectionately known, is now happily munching his way through his daily diet of crickets.

Warden Ray Jackson said: “After living in Cuba I can’t imagine Middlewich is of the most exotic places on the planet for him to come to.”

His nearest neighbour – a British frog that had been mauled by a cat – is expected to be set free soon.

But, while Middlewich is not the most glamorous place Pablo has been to, at least he will no longer have to worry about the native aquatic snakes that would usually be out to eat him.
