POLICE are clamping down on drink and drug driving during the festive season.

Running through December to the New Year, the campaign follows the same scheme which was run last year and resulted in almost 3,000 roadside breath and impairment tests.

Cheshire Constabulary will not tolerate drink or drug driving and we will actively target these irresponsible drivers over the Christmas season to remove them from the roads.

Roads liaison officer Mike Jones, said

Some 10 per cent of these people failed the test meaning at least 300 drink and drug drivers put you at risk.

If police stop you it is to ensure that this number is reduced over this Christmas period.

The campaign coincides with the National Department for Transport’s ‘Think! Moment of Doubt’ campaign.

To help in the fight against drink driving in the county, Cheshire Police recently received 249 new roadside breath screening devices.

The new hi-tech breathalysers allow each test to be recorded on the spot and downloaded for evidence.

Roads liaison officer Mike Jones, said: “Cheshire Constabulary will not tolerate drink or drug driving and we will actively target these irresponsible drivers over the Christmas season to remove them from the roads.

“We know from previous years that a number of motorists in Cheshire will drive while impaired through drink or drugs. This is either because they have a complete disregard for the law and other road users, or because they think it’s worth the risk. They will be caught.”

He added: “Anyone driving under the influence of drink or drugs has the potential to cause death and injury to other innocent people as well as themselves.”

where are all the extra police going to come from to do this??? I am very curious as most of the time when you call them they are always "to busy" or does it mean when they are all out "determined" to catch scum who drink/drug drive the other crimes go by unattended. oh and while i'm at it why did'nt the police pull up the man in the pick-up truck last tuesday morning who had no seat belt on, on the phone and had no brake lights I saw all this from 30 yards away, the police car overtook the van up chester way i make that 8ft away????
