MIDDLEWICH Town can afford no more slip ups this season.

That's the message from manager Terry Murphy as his side whittled the title race down to a straight scrap with Styal.

The Witches trail their east Cheshire rivals by four points with six matches to play.

"They are the ones to watch," said the Town boss.

"Pilkington have dropped a lot of points recently so I reckon they are out of it now."

The past seven days have reaped seven points for the defending champions against as they effectively elminated Curzon Ashton Reserves, Greenalls Padgate St Oswalds and Crosfields from the reckoning.

Their 4-1 win against Curzon was rated as their best display of the season by Murphy.

"We were fantastic," he said "They went ahead but once we were back in the game we could have gone on to score six or seven.

"Our performance totally deflated them because before the game they still had a chance of finishing first."

A goalless draw against Greenalls followed on Thursday before top scorer Mike Brandon bagged the only goal at Crosfields on Saturday.

"I thought we murdered Crosfields," said Murphy.

"Their keeper had a great game and stopped us running up a cricket score to be honest.

"It really was a good performance."

"We should have got something against Greenalls.

"They had a lad sent off and we battered on the door but just couldn't get the breakthrough."

Town, who lost key defender Dave Shore for the rest of the season at the weekend, were due at Trafford Reserves last night, Tuesday.

Shaun Came has stepped in to play alongside Chris Jump, while Murphy can also call on Graham Kay or Lee Duckworth should he need to in the next fortnight.

They play the return match against Pilkington at Seddon Street on Saturday, kick off 3pm, before heading to Padgate next Tuesday, kick off 6.30pm.

Pilkington currently head the table by three points from Styal, but have played three more matches.

Styal were due at Woodley last night, Tuesday, before heading to Curzon Ashton Reserves on Thursday.

They are due at penultimate bottom Poynton on Saturday.

Boring long ball football to the lads up front. Terrible to watch. Curzon & Greenalls are the only sides who play football in that league.

Perhaps the players can be forgiven for not entertaining 'Mr Spectator'..Just consider this however, during the April most of the players played 11 games for the team.. add into that a lot of the players played Sunday league as well, about 4 games a month, that's 15 games in 30 days.., it would average out at a game every other day. I cant see the prima-donnas in the premiership on £100,000 a week accepting this, especially as all of the Middlewich team have day jobs to do as well.
Agreed Greenalls are a good footballing side. the Away game I watched in Warrington was one of the best I have seen in a while and could have gone either way, and Curzon do have a magnificent facility, but on that night Middlewich were by far the superior team..
perhaps 'Mr Spectator' should also consider that the miniscule entry fee to the ground along with free parking is a snip compared to what he would pay in Liverpool or Manchester..
This is grass roots football, yes, it sometimes isn't the prettiest or most exciting, but you pay your monies.. you take your choice.. Middlewich are after all, the most successful team in that division in the last few years... so they must be doing something right..Enough said...

SUPPORTER - By no means do I not appreciate how well the team have done over the last few years but with the exception of a couple of players, the team plays percentage football which is effective yes, but to bring young lads through and hopefully provide the stepping stone to higher level football the way we play is not good enough. We power past teams with our direct style but get us playing against a good footballing side and we will get found out. Nonetheless, well done to the lads for another good season and well done to all involved with the running of the club.
