THE battle for fourth place will go to the last weekend of the season after Warrington Wolves crashed to a 44-24 defeat at bottom club Castleford on Sunday night.

Wigan’s home defeat to Leeds on Friday meant that victory at Cas would have all but secured a home play-off tie for Wolves, whose points difference is far superior to the Warriors.

But defeat at The Jungle means Wolves will go into their final regular season game – at home to Huddersfield on September 5 – needing a win to confirm fourth spot.

Defeat to the Giants could allow Wigan, who travel to St Helens in their final game, and Bradford, who host Hull KR on Monday before finishing at Castleford, to move above them.

The loss at Castleford was Wolves’ third straight defeat and could have been much heavier had the hosts not missed eight of their 10 conversions.

Chris Riley was passed fit after suffering concussion last week but Jimmy Lowes surprisingly still handed American winger Taylor Welch his debut on the left flank, with Kevin Penny demoted to 18th man after a fragile defensive performance against Hull KR.

Wolves fell behind in the fifth minute to a replica of the try that marked the end of Paul Cullen’s reign when Cas won at The Halliwell Jones in May, with Luke Dorn racing 90 metres to score an interception try after Lee Briers had attempted a risky pass from the floor.

Briers hit back as he supported Ben Westwood to touch down between the posts, with Chris Hicks adding the conversion to put Wolves in front.

But Cas had most of the possession and regained the lead when pressure from Awen Guttenbeil meant Hicks was unable to deal with Dorn’s torpedo and Michael Shenton fed the loose ball to Michael Wainwright on the left flank.

Shenton then laid on a try for the supporting Stuart Donlan, with Kirk Dixon converting, although Wolves responded when Riley’s smart grounding was given the benefit of the doubt by the video referee after Briers’ grubber had bounced over Wainwright.

Castleford always looked dangerous in attack, though, and quick hands allowed Wainwright to score from Dixon’s pass.

Donlan then touched down the loose ball to make it 22-12 at half time after Shenton had possession under pressure from Welch and Matt King.

That 22-12 scoreline was replicated in the second half, when Wolves lost Martin Gleeson to injury for a period before the England international centre returned to play out the closing stages at loose forward.

Wolves were the first to score after the interval, with Matty Blythe notching his first senior try after surging past Donlan from Michael Monaghan’s pass.

Hicks converted to reduce the deficit to four points but Mike Cooper’s knock on turned over possession and Cas capitalised when Richard Owen scored in the corner after Ryan McGoldrick’s cut-out pass had eluded King.

Briers was then sent to the sin bin for a late tackle on kicker Dorn and Westwood’s knock on led to Shenton putting Owen over again.

Dorn then fed Ned Catic, who bumped off Riley and crossed for a try converted by Craig Huby.

Riley again touched down a grubber that had bounced up awkwardly – this time from the boot of Monaghan – to give Wolves faint hopes of a comeback.

But Dixon scored from Huby’s superb flick pass to end the game as a contest and, after Briers had limped off injured and Westwood had been sent to the sin bin for dissent, Wainwright completed his hat-trick and a miserable night for Wolves.

Every body who was dissing paul cullen should stand up and hang there head in shame!!! i like jimmy lowes but it was obvious that the trouble at warrington ran deeper than the head coach, a team full of half hearted players took to the field last night and it wasn't pretty, we have now lost 2 games to the bottom side in super league, we shouldn't be talking about wether or not were gonna be 4th, 5th or 6th we should be knocking on catalans door for 3rd, there was no pride no passion and no togetherness, our discipline was not there, so come on lads wake up and make us proud!!!!!

The team played as well as it could do considering the number of first team players out injured and this should be great experience for the young players who appeared last night. I consider the main problem to be the lack of ball playing forward from whom the other pack men can run off.
I know the game has changed considerably over the years but it is still based on the concept of creating an opening then having the legs available to turn this into a try. Perhaps I'm too simplistic in my reasoning but fifty years ago this seemed to work fine for most teams.
The defence last night was a shambles and team discipline poor. Perhaps it would be better if instead of watching replays of the match the team examined how St Helens operate...as I'm sure this is the standard we would like to improve on?
I believe Paul Scunthorpe is looking for a new club and even though he has spent the best part of his playing years with the enemy, it could prove a wise decision to bring him home.....after a full medical and on appropriate terms.
I hope the boys can get their act together for next week but we shouldn't lose sight of the fact there are good young prospects coming through but they need time and guidance on the park.
Forever hopeful....for many years!

Last night,
I went down on a coach last night to only see the efforts of people like jon clarke let the side down. Ben Westwood - if everyone played like him we would be above saints! If the score wasnt bad enough the warrington players didnt even take notice of the crowd. and the 'boo boys' i guess you want lowes out now its the team thats needs disaplin not lowes

Warrington Wolves definition.......
unprofessional, amateur, ill-disciplined, unpassionate team of prima-donnas.
I guess that sums it up

Why was Penny dropped for Welch???? We effectively played with 12 men because nobody wanted to pass to him. At least Penny would have had some potential go forward.
Please put Chris Hicks back to the wing. Why can we be world beaters one week and National Leagues the next unless its hidden injuries. And when does Higham arrive. Too much opportunity for ranting. We need one last effort against Hudds and irrespective of what happens then we have had a reasonable season.

Had Cas had a goal kicker they would have put 60 points on the board, no pride, no passion, no chance, nuff said.

I'm here again, 12 months on and guess what? I am still saying the same thing, "there's always next year", we've got no chance in the play off's. No spirit, maybe only the one you drink, no pride and no chance after the last 2 matches. Don't fancy our chances against Giants, one of our bogey teams, we'll probably make it a hatrick of defeats to end the season.
See you all this time next year saying the same things. Thats all folks!
