GARRETH Carvell has his sights on making on impact with Warrington Wolves after this week missing out on a place in the World Cup with England.

Carvell, who had been struggling with a groin injury while in the England train-on squad, is convinced that he is joining a Wolves squad that are capable of challenging for major honours.

The prop, who has moved to The Halliwell Jones Stadium from Hull FC for a fee of around £60,000, won the Challenge Cup with the Airlie Birds in 2005 and also appeared in the 2006 Grand Final.

And he says that experience has made him all the more determined to win more trophies.

He said: “I’m keen to win things. That’s why I started playing and that’s what I want to do.

“I tasted that with Hull in 2005 with the Challenge Cup and I’m thirsty for some more of that. I think the move to Warrington will bring that for me.

“The backs and the halves are outstanding and they should be up there at the top of the league, fighting for titles and Challenge Cup wins.

“Hopefully I can come on board and help a lot with that.

“Mickey Higham is another good signing with a lot of experience so the team on paper is really good.

“Let’s just hope we can put it on the pitch and give the fans what they want.”

Carvell was in a Hull side that emerged from a poor start to 2006 to reach the Grand Final.

John Kear departed as boss at the start of that season but Peter Sharp came in and used adversity to spur them on to Old Trafford.

Wolves would love to emulate such a transformation, having endured a difficult end to 2008 by only finishing sixth and then crashing out in the first round of the play-offs.

Of Hull’s remarkable 2006 campaign, Carvell recalled: “We gelled as a team.

“We had a good coaching staff and it was a real team effort.

“Things were happening at the club that people didn’t like and everyone just decided to get their head down and it worked for us.

“It was one of the great experiences that I had at Hull.”

Carvell will face considerable competition in the front row from the likes of Adrian Morley, Paul Rauhihi, Paul Wood, Steve Pickersgill and Mike Cooper.

But he said: “That was one of the other things I signed for – there will be a lot of competition for places with the quality of props at Warrington.

“I hope that will make me a better player for having to fight for that shirt.”
